CAA School Zone Safety App

Every year, local CAA clubs gather data on the number of driving infractions that occur within school zones. The numbers collected are used by the municipalities to inform awareness campaigns, and advise changes to traffic patterns.

The Problem

CAA’s traditional process required volunteers using pen & paper to record infractions, that would then be manually compiled into a centralized spreadsheet. The process was time-consuming and inaccurate. CAA needed a digital solution, and they needed it quickly, as there were only 8 weeks until their next campaign.

The Process

In order to meet the deadline, we had to work fast and efficiently. CAA understood the importance of taking an iterative approach and agreed to adopt an agile workflow. Weekly stand-ups allowed us to present workflows, clarify assumptions, and ask questions that we had compiled throughout the previous week. Interactive prototypes allowed us to quickly build, test, and validate our approach. This allowed for continual adjustments, as unique use cases were uncovered each week.

The Solution

The web-based, mobile app allowed volunteers to quickly and accurately log infractions. Individual Club Administrations are able to analyze and share data on the fly, while CAA National can compare and spot trends across the country.

Key Learnings

Since the successful trial run in 2017, the tool has been widely adopted by Clubs and Municipalities across Canada. Additional features, such as segmented behaviour logs, commenting, and supplementary User Admin and Permission have further enhanced the end experience
